Blue Lotus gives wine a sweet, floral flavor, but it also has some amazing health benefits! Blue Lotus contains nuciferan (a natural anti-spasmodic) along with aporphine, which will give you feelings of calming euphoria. For that reason, it is a natural anti-anxiety and stress reliever. Hence why it was commonly used in ancient social gatherings.

Some use this as an aphrodisiac and others have said it helps with erectile dysfunction. Is it anecdotal or is it fact? Give it a try and find out. At the very least you will experience something slightly more seductive than wine on it’s own. I find it has a mildly stimulating effect, other say it promotes a state of joyful connection. Each person’s experience will be slightly different so be sure to experiment with the strength of your blue lotus wine to see what works for you perfect balance for you.

There isn’t a lot of science out there on this beautiful flower but the folklore definitely carries much weight.

The ancient Egyptians believed mixing blue lotus flower with red wine would create an aphrodisiac and euphoric combination, it can create a powerful psychoactive elixir with unique effects so I caution to start low in the beginning until you see what your own tolerance may be.

Pats used: the petals and stamens of the blue lotus flower

Ingredients + Instructions – the easy way.

1 bottle of your favourite wine (red is most commonly used but I love it in a nice rose during the summer)

10-20 grams of blue lotus flowers or do what you wish to taste/desired effects

Optional: Sweeteners such fruit or honey.

Optional: Any of your favourite spices.

Let sit 2 weeks to a month become psychoactive and magical. You can also let it sit a few days for a milder less intense experience.

Don’t forget to strain before drinking.

Alternate recipe – a more traditional approach.

In a large pot, bring two glasses of the Rose wine to a gentle simmer.

Take the wine off simmer and add 20g of dried blue lotus petals.

Allow the wine and petals to infuse for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Pour the remaining wine from the bottle into the pot, along with 3 tablespoons of honey, and stir to combine.

Using a funnel, pour the mixture (wine and petals) back into the wine bottle. Reseal the bottle and store the blue lotus infused wine in the refrigerator, making sure to shake it gently every couple of days.

After 1-2 weeks, strain the wine through cheesecloth or a fine-mesh strainer into a clean container. The longer you leave the wine to infuse the stronger the effects of the blue lotus . If desired, you can leave the petals in the wine or add additional herbs or spices to enhance the flavour.

Store the Blue Lotus infused wine in the refrigerator and serve chilled.

Blue Lotus wine should be treated with sacred reverence. Create a ceremony and set an intention. They say this is best enjoyed with a special person, although you can always bestow love upon yourself alone and enjoy the journey.
