Motherwort is a wonderful nervine herb that has a multitude of uses. One of my favourites is using it as a remedy for heartburn, the kind you get due to tension. It’s a nice addition to any blend used for hot flashes (with a liver or gallbladder connection), for heart palpitations, anxiety and even panic attacks.

For those with Hyperthyroid it is a nice addition as it soothes the anxiety component and is good for the heart (that’s where the palpitation part comes in). Be aware that it is not for those with Hypothyroidism or those on cardiac meds.

Motherwort is helpful for lowering elevated blood pressure, but if you have low blood pressure you will want to use with caution. It can help to relax artery walls, allowing blood to flow more easily. It thins the blood so it can pass through blood vessels more easily, increasing circulation. Back in the days before modern medicine, motherwort was used for hypertension.

Ladies with PMS, motherwort helps to balance out that shift in hormones which gives us cramps, mood shifts, bloating and constipation. Paired up with other herbs it can be the remedy that solves many period woes, but on it’s own it’s still a pretty fantastic remedy.

Suggested use: 10 – 30 drops, 3 x per day for short term use.

Alternative use: 7-10 drops for more long term daily use.

Ingredients: Mugwort, buckwheat honey, alcohol, plant terpenes.

This herb is classified as an emmenagogue, which can stimulate contractions and uterine clearing therefore not recommended during pregnancy.

In a random controlled trial, adding motherwort extract to the new mother’s therapy significantly reduced blood loss from the cesarean surgery. Researchers weren’t sure exactly why it was effective, but the extract showed important potential to help new mothers stay healthier and recover faster after the birth of their child
