Ginger + Onion Oxymel

Price range: $45.00 through $67.00

Product description

It’s a potent blend that works by combining Canadian Buckwheat honey, raw apple cider vinegar, onions and ginger.  They say food is medicine and we truly believe that our ancestors were right. They call it “natures antibiotic” – hey we didn’t say it, they did.  We just call it traditional folklore that works.

Why Buckwheat honey? Because it is high in polyphenols, has been shown to have antibacterial effects and can help fight antibiotic -resistant infections (specifically potent against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudodomonas aeruginosa), it’s known to speed up healing as well. We aren’t saying that our products will do this, but there is data to show the INGREDIENTS can.

Non GMO, Gluten Free. Organically grown ingredients but without a organic certification so we can’t say it’s organic. Free from pesticides, all ONTARIO sourced ingredients. Local supporting local.

Suggested usage: 10 ml 2-3 times daily at the onset of symptoms. We like to use it for sore throats since honey is soothing. It can be taken straight by the spoonful (try to avoid metal as it destroys the honey) or a small shot glass. You can also add it to a salad dressing or a warm beverage if that’s yourthing. Be sure to speak with your doc to ensure something serious isn’t going on behind the scenes (strep throat and other infections can be quite serious).

An Oxymel should last 1 – 2 years in the fridge, I keep mine in a dark kitchen cupboard as I prefer it room temperature and have no issues (honey is a preservative). Safe for those who are pregnant, nursing and children over the age of 12 months (due to honey content).

Why is it so expensive? Great question! We infused this brew with plant terpenes (which are quite costly) and expensive Buckwheat honey (Canada’s version of manuka).  While Buckwheat honey is cheaper than Manuka it is pricier than wild honey and we use quite a bit in our formulations. In fact it’s a 60/40 ratio of honey to ACV.

Want to make your own? Send us a message and we’ll send over our recipe – minus the terpenes of course! We like to share around here. Oxymels are a great way to get started in the home herbalist kitchen.

Pseudodomonas aeruginosa: can cause infections in the blood, lungs (pneumonia), or other parts of the body after surgery

Staphylococcus aureus: can cause serious infections such as bloodstream infections, pneumonia, or bone and joint infections. Please seek medical attention and consult a healthcare provider before adding in any herbal or natural food based products into your regime

Bonus points: Buckwheat honey is not as sweet as traditional honey, better for those watching blood sugar levels. It’s also great for the gut – it seems to support growth of Bifidobacteria while suppressing pathogenic bacteria in our gut.

I recently tried this at an event. The smell was strong but the taste was delicious. I was pleasantly surprised. We had a hockey tournament and of course the kids came home with sore throats so I gave them this for a couple of days and it saved our March break! Thank you.
