Some promote this herb as an antidepressant but the real definition would be that it is considered a thymoleptic. Meaning having life enhancing and stimulating actions on the body and the mind. For those experiencing mild to moderate depression or nervous exhaustion this herb may be the one to reach for.
Damiana is considered a tonic herb, it is found to be restorative to the nervous system (as a nervine) while also being praised as an aphrodisiac. This is due to the tepene thymol which has antiseptic and nervine actions.
The stimulating and restorative properties make this a lovely additive for almost anyone experiencing long term stress, which are known to cause lack of libido, depression and anxiety.
Ladies – those PMS headaches are no match for this one.
Men – are you to quick to finish, this herb is said to help in that department. What man doesn’t want to last longer (oh and it helps get it up too)
Due to the Arbutin content it is said that Damiana can help aid in the treatment of cystitis, and urethritis, along with UTI’s. I like to alternate between this and Uva Ursi for this very reason, they both have arbutin which converts to hydroquinone (a strong urinary antiseptic).
Damiana has many uses such a laxative (constipation due to poor bowel muscle tone) and painful or delayed periods.
