An oxymel is a great alternative to a tincture for those who are trying to avoid alcohol based tinctures or for children over the age of 12 months.

Both apple cider vinegar and honey have been used for millennia to help boost the immune system, soothe dry throats, and help with digestive issues. Organic apple cider vinegar is high in acetic acid, and when you use the raw, unfiltered version, you are also getting “mother” strands of proteins, enzymes, and helpful bacteria

An Oxymel should last 6 months to 1 year in a fridge. Safe for those who are pregnant, nursing and children over the age of 12 months (due to honey content). Always check the herbs that are added as this may change depending on what has been incorporated.

Common ingredients used in various recipes are:

Honey has so many benefits, depending on the source the additional benefits (Wildflower honey, vs Buckwheat honey vs Dandelion honey etc)

Garlic is considered anti-parasitic, antiviral, antibiotic (as mentioned above) and antihistaminic. It is also an expectorant that can also help lower blood pressure and aid in regulating blood sugar.

Oregano is immune boosting, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious disease. Used to treat infections (internally). It’s even helpful to relief and cope with stress, when we are sick that can be quite beneficial. Oregano helps the body to produce white blood cells which defend the body against bacterial infections, bronchial infections, asthma and coughs.

Ginger is great for stimulating circulation (increasing blood flow). It helps calm an uneasy tummy, antispasmodic and carminative.

Lemon has anti inflammatory properties

Thyme is an excellent expectorant, great for digestion as well as respiratory issues and has antimicrobial properties.

How To Make Your OWN

Ingredients

  • Organic dried organic herbs, onions (use a variety), garlic and ginger. Omit what you don’t like, ad what you do!
  • 1 part organic, raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1 part raw, local honey – Buckwheat is lower in sugar and contains minerals like manuka honey so it’s an even better option if you can get it.

Directions

  • If you’re using dried herbs this is a great method:
  • Fill a jar 1/4 full of your choice of herbs.
  • Cover with equal parts apple cider vinegar and honey to fill jar.
  • Stir to incorporate.
  • Wipe any liquid off the rim, place a piece of parchment paper under a metal canning lid and ring to keep the vinegar from touching the metal.
  • Shake jar until thoroughly mixed.
  • Store jar in a cool, dark place to extract for two weeks. Shake jar at least twice a week to assist in extraction.
  • Strain out herbs through a strainer, pressing down on the herbs to release as much liquid as possible.
  • Pour strained oxymel into a glass jar, don’t forget to label and date it!
  • Store in cool, dark place until ready to use. When stored properly, shelf life is approximately 6-12 months
